In December, I and seven other Young Officers and Officer Cadets will be attempting The Fatchops Cancer March (FCM).

What on earth is the FCM?

Well... the FCM is based on Exercise Long Reach, set in the Welsh Black Mountains.

We will be attempting to undertake one of the British Army's toughest challenges: Exercise Long Reach. Every man and woman that commissions into the British Army must undertake Exercise Long Reach in their Junior Term at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Everyone on the team will have done the exercise before, most have some fairly miserable experiences to relate!

What is Long Reach?

65-80KM across the Black Mountains. Within 36 hours. Through a series of checkpoints.

With 20KG on your back.

Sounds fairly straightforward. What's the twist?

A 50KG stretcher.

In December.

And we're trying to break the Sandhurst record time.

The last Long Reach in February 2013 saw 41 Officer Cadets evacuated from the mountains due to the conditions.

There were over 200 to begin with.

This time it's just 8 of us. More weight. Less time.
